Human factor is the most important part from the special forces operation. If the right people chosen, they could change disaster condition to successful condition. The points are they have to be independent, persistent, determined, sly, smart, realistic, but sometimes they also have to be able to think unconventionally to find a solution. Those points or conditions up there could make a common conventional unit to be frustrated. This is a little picture about their selection
Although special forces selection is very physical challenging, its main purpose is testing the candidates' psychological. Physical fitness is only important to enabling the candidate to take part in the process, not to pass. At the end of the selection, most of the candidates suffer from wounds, which unfortunately they have to deal with it themselves. From this harsh process, the selection officer will make an attempt to search the men who are able to continue mission without thinking about any disaster or obstacle. Even if he is the only one member left in the team. A rare kind of power or stimulus, which is believed to only available if a man is under a great pressure. During that tight selection period, a special recruit will start to be seen among the other candidate. They are the one who can endure the pressure and able to find a power needed inside them.
Team Work
For some units like US Army Rangers, US Marine Corps, British Parachute Regiment, Royal Marine Commando, also the 2e Regiment Etranger de Parachutistes Legion Etrangere (Second Para Regiment, French Foreign Legion), the majority of selection activities are team work based. Soldiers in this troops fights in small teams. Thus they have to be able to work with others in great pressure and difficulty. But for the other units like US Delta Force, British Special Air Service, US Navy SEAL, or British Special Boat Service, although small teams still remains a basic teaming, every member in the team has to be able to work independently, for a long term, in great danger and uncomfortable conditions. In selection, a phase that has to be done is isolation period. In here they have to be able to survive with depending on resources and self-discipline. Because there is often no compulsion or bossy commander there, this phase is a tricky one, the condition is stable and calm that often deceit the candidate.
Special Skills
There are some relevant specific selection process for every unit. For example SBS and SEAl, their candidates have to prove themselves as potential swimmer and prove that they don't have Claustrophobia (Afraid of closed or small place, such as lifts, sub way, submarine). Most of the special forces unit get a special training for withstanding interrogation in order to prepare them if they get captured. This training is important, because any information given to the captivator could endanger the other and threaten the mission. Hard selection procedure of this kind guarantee that only a high quality soldier recruited.
